Table of contents for "Snap!" (Just tidying up) )

Round 6 was the last round in the official contest. Although we contestants knew the title of Round Seven, we didn't know the specifics, so everything that follows (except, of course, the title of Round Seven) is entirely my fault.

If Lexi Rossi looks familiar, it's probably because she first appeared in Already in Progress. Not to mention that she's a townie teen who appears in many games, a standard CAS head that shows up when you choose S1, and the basis for my avatar.

More being tidy :) )
Expect this to go really fast.

For those who are curious, Frederic is originally from Already in Progress, and that's where he will return.

Tidy, tidy, tidy )

I did say they were extensive... )

General Reference
This website has plot synopses, full script and lyrics, and sound files for all works by Gilbert & Sullivan, even the bad ones. I use it for reference all the time.

Chapter 1: Not based on any specific show
When Fred'ric was a little lad from The Pirates of Penzance
The "Mikado" was played by Mifune Sanders.
The "Suspiciously Un-Japanese-Looking 'Gentleman Of Japan,' Who Had to Use The Little Samurai's Room" was played by Simon Couderc.

Chapter 2: Not based on any specific show

Chapter 3: Not based on any specific show
My eyes are fully open from Ruddigore - this song is also known as the "Matter Patter"

Chapter 4: Not based on any specific show
I have a song to sing, O! from The Yeomen of the Guard

Ruth Tells A Story #1: The Mikado, or, The Town of Titipu
Please note: Not all of these are from the same production. They're all good versions, though.
Act I
"As someday it may happen" -- or you could try this version, or this one, or just look it up on Youtube...
"With aspect stern and gloomy stride" (and Part 2) -- Act I finale (Only watch if you've got a quarter-hour you don't particularly need)
Act II
"A more humane Mikado" (Another long one -- the Mikado is rather excessive, but it's Descartes' favorite version)
"On a tree by a river" (This is a good version, but it has a tendency to freeze. If it does, try this one instead.)
"There is beauty in the bellow of the blast" (Technically from The Hot Mikado, but that's just  an adaptation of The Mikado reorchestrated to sound more jazzy in the 1930s. The plot, lyrics, and melodies are the same.)
Recommended Filmed Versions
1984 Canadian version (Best. Pooh-Bah. EVAR!)
1987 British version (with Eric Idle as Koko, and a wonderfully dignified Katisha)

Chapter 5: Not based on any specific show
"If you give me your attention" from Princess Ida

Chapter 6:Not based on any specific show
"When I was a lad" from HMS Pinafore

Chapter 7: Not based on any specific show
"So go to him and say to him" from Patience -- The poet doesn't usually dance around like a boxer, but this is otherwise a good rendition

Ruth Tells A Story #2: The Pirates of Penzance, or, The Slave of Duty
Please note: Not all of these are from the same production. They're not even all from professional productions. They're all good versions, though.
Act I
"How beautifully blue the sky" (Most productions have a few more sisters than this...)
Act II
"When you had left our pirate fold" (Also known as the "Paradox Trio")
And a bonus song for you: "When a felon's not engaged in his employment" I didn't work the song in to my story, but I couldn't resist: this version has the best dancing Police Sergeant EVER.
"With cat-like tread"
Recommended Filmed Versions
1982 BBC version -- Uninspired but competently performed and a very good introduction
1983 version with Kevin Kline -- A good version if you can get past the very 0's orchestration
Chapter 8: Not based on any specific show
"Take a pair of sparkling eyes" from The Gondoliers
Chapter 9: Not based on any specific show
"When the night wind howls" from Ruddigore
"the gloaming noun): the low light that is seen in the evening as the sun sets" (according to learnersdictionary.com, a Merriam-Webster product)
Myrna, or, Oakapple's Own: Based on Patience, or, Bunthorne's Bride
Some fun songs from Act I:
"Long years ago" -- Patience has excellent enunciation!
"Prithee, pretty maiden" -- amateur camerawork, but fun
Act I finale -- This is only about half the finale, but it's the best version out there
Some fun songs from Act II:
"When I go out of door" -- overexposed, but good singing
Act II finale -- the fellow in the top hat is the same one who was in the pink pants in the previous clip

"Barbie Girl" by Aqua
Chapter 10: Partially based on The Sorcerer
"Welcome joy, adieu to sadness" from The Sorcerer
"Sprites of earth and air" (Also known as "The Incantation") from The Sorcerer
"Now to the banquet we press" from The Sorcerer -- Technically, this clip is from Act I, but it's reprised as the closing of Act II
And a bonus song that I didn't work in, but that's a lot of fun:

Chapter 11: Not based on any particular show
"You understand?" from Ruddigore (And the Vincent Price version, which I don't like as well, but which has VINCENT PRICE)
Arbitration: Based on Trial by Jury
"All hail great Judge!"/"When I, good friends, was called to the bar" (I couldn't work it in, but the second song is well worth a look)
Finale (contains "I love him, I love him!", "The question, gentlemen, is one of liquor," and "Oh, joy unbounded")
In fact, if you've got half an hour to spare, the entirety of the production I chose has been uploaded and is worth watching, although the pieces are somewhat out of order.
Chapter 12: Not based on any particular show
Since I have nothing else to offer here, check out the lyrics for "Dear friends, take pity on my lot" from The Sorcerer

Chapter 13: Not based on any particular show
"A maiden fair to see" from HMS Pinafore
Chapter 14: Not based on any particular show
Finale, Act 1 rom The Mikado - Ruth's favorite part begins at 6:03; all non-Katisha parts have been edited out by the poster
"In enterprise of martial kind" from The Gondoliers
"Farewell, my own!" from HMS Pinafore
Chapter 15: Not based on any particular show

Chapter 16: Not based on any particular show
"Hereupon we're both agreed" from The Yeomen of the Guard
"Fair moon, to thee I sing" from HMS Pinafore
Chapter 17: Not based on any particular show
"Now hearken to my strict command" from Princess Ida production values are not so great, and the orchestra is out of tune, but it's not a popular song)
Chapter 18: Not based on any particular show
"Strange adventure!" from The Yeomen of the Guard
You can find the full citation that was omitted from the footnote here.

Chapter 19: Not based on any particular show
Since I have nothing else to offer, here are the lyrics to the cut song from The Yeomen of the Guard that I used for the title.
The Order of the Llama, or, The Performer and her Pianist: based on The Yeomen of the Guard, or, The Merryman and His Maid
Some fun songs from Act I:
"Oh, Seargent Meryll, is it true?", "Leonard!", and "My lord, I know not how to tell the news I bear!" -- from different productions, but together comprising the entire finale to Act I, since nobody appears to have uploaded the whole thing. One note: the male soloist in the Yeomen's uniform is the same character in all three clips.
And one I like a lot but omitted because it's irrelevant to a Sims game: "When our gallant Norman foes"
Some fun songs from Act II:
"Oh, a private buffoon is a light-hearted loon" (from a modern-dress production)
"Hark! What was that, sir?" (which I always think of as "the creeping, creeping, crawling song")
"A man who would woo a fair maid" -- A bit overexposed, but the "business" is perfect! (Phoebe Meryll is the one on the far stage left)
And an alternate version with the same cast as the Act I song, so you can see just how "I have a song to sing, O!" changes

Chapter 20: Not based on any particular show
"Bridegroom and bride!" (and "When a merry maiden marries") from The Gondoliers
Chapter 21: Not based on any particular show
"My gallant crew, good morning!" from HMS Pinafore
OFB Farmstand, based on HMS Pinafore
"Carefully on tiptoe stealing" (Josephine is off, but it's the best option out there with something to look at while you listen)
There are lots and lots of good songs in this show, so I recommend going to YouTube, typing in "MHS Pinafore," and watching just about everything that comes up.
Not-Heiress Rose, based on Princess Ida
"A woman of the wisest wit" (The volume on this recording is a little low)
Finale Act III (This was a version set in the 1960s)
And just because I like them: "This helmet, I suppose" and "Whene'er I spoke"

Chapter 22: Not based on any particular show
"Rising early in the morning" from The Gondoliers

Ruth Tells A Story #3: Iolanthe, or, The Peer And The Peri
Please note: Not all of these are from the same production
Act I
"Tripping hither, tripping thither" (I did warn you about the dancing)
"Good morrow, good mother!"
"Loudly let the trumpet bray" (Also known as "The March of the Peers")
"The Law is the true embodiment"
"When darkly looms the day"
Act II
"When all night long a chap remains"
"Strephon's a member of Parliament"
"When Britain really ruled the waves" (This singer does the best job I've ever heard)
"In vain to us you plead" (Also known as "Don't Go") This is from a rehearsal, but it's the best and most complete version I could find
"Oh, foolish fay"
Phyllis, Mountararat, and Tolloller dialog (played straight)
Phyllis, Mountararat, and Tolloller dialog (played more as I interpreted it)
"Though p'r'aps I may incur your blame"
"Love, unrequited" (Also known as the "Nightmare Song")
"If you go in"
"If we're weak enough to tarry"
Finale, Act II
I cannot recommend any filmed versions. The BBC Production from the 1980s, alas, is only a cure for insomnia.

Chapter 23: Not based on any particular show
"The world is but a broken toy" from Princess Ida

Ruth Tells a Story #4: Ruddigore, or, The Witch's Curse
Please note: not all of these are from the same production.
Act I
"Fair is Rose"
"If someone there should chance to be"
"I know a youth"
"From the briny sea/I shipped, d'ye see"
"My boy, you may take it from me"
"In sailing o'er life's ocean wide"
"Cheerily carols the lark/To a garden full of posies" (and following dialog)
"Oh why am I moody and sad?"
"You understand?"
Finale, Act I

Act II
"I once was as meek as a new-born lamb"
"Happily coupled are we"
"I once was a very abandoned person"
"My eyes are fully open"
"There grew a little flower"
Finale, Act II

Chapter 24: Not based on any particular show
"We're rigged out in magnificent array" from The Grand Duke (The orchestra is out of tune, and the singing is only so-so, but there is only one version of this song available on YouTube)

Chapter 25: Not based on any particular show
"Oh joy, oh rapture unforeseen" from HMS Pinafore (Audio only)
For those who don't recognize the person in the second-to-last slide, that's Lisa's sister Leila, star of The Jack Point Home for Pedestrian Playables. Check it out!

Ruth's (u)OWBC Presents: How Shall I Play This Part?: Not based on any particular show
The title comes from "How shall I play this part?" from The Grand Duke
Other featured songs:
"Oh, I have wrought much evil with my spells!" from The Sorcerer
"Things are seldom what they seem" from HMS Pinafore
"When you had left our pirate fold" from The Pirates of Penzance
"Silvered is the raven hair" from Patience (A non-costumed performance, but funny)
"Oh, foolish fay" from Iolanthe (Another non-costumed performance, but beautifully done)
"Now wouldn't you like to rule the roast?" from Princess Ida (You'll have to turn up the volume to hear the singing)
Finale, Act I from The Mikado (Katisha doesn't show up until the halfway point)
"There grew a little flower" from Ruddigore
"When our gallant Norman foes" from The Yeomen of the Guard
"Small titles and orders" from The Gondoliers
"Oh, would some demon power the gift impart" from Utopia, Limited (Text only, as the relevant portion has not been filmed and posted on YouTube)
"As o'er our penny roll we sing" from The Grand Duke (Text only, as there isn't a filmed version available on YouTube)

Chapter 26: Not based on any particular show
"Alone, and yet alive!" from The Mikado

Chapter 27: Not based on any particular show
"But bless my heart/Try we life-long" from The Gondoliers

Chapter 28: Not based on any particular show

"List and learn" from The Gondoliers (Every version I could find sounded slightly jarring on the opening, even the professional recordings, but at least this one's visually interesting)

Chapter 29: Not based on any particular show
"Merrily ring the luncheon bell" from Princess Ida

Chapter 30: Not based on any particular show
"About a century since" from The Grand Duke

Chapter 31: Not based on any particular show
"When you find you're a broken-down critter" from The Grand Duke (Nothing to look at, but the best available version)

The Middle Child, or, Rock Paper Scissors based on The Grand Duke, or, The Statutory Duel
Some fun songs from Act I (I did mention the show was a flop, didn't I?)
"Won't it be a pretty wedding?"
"The good Grand Duke/A pattern to professors of monarchial autonomy"
"Come hither all you people" (The Grand Duke here is not a comic baritone, but he does have a fun energy)

Some fun songs from Act II
"If the light of love's lingering ember"
"We're rigged out in magnificent array"
"Take my advice -- when deep in debt" (Alternate version with live people)

The Undergraduates, or, The True Shankel ~and~ Ruth Tells a Story #7: The Gondoliers, or, The King of Barataria

"There lived a king"
"In a contemplative fashion"
"On the day when I was wedded"
"To help unhappy commoners"
"I am a courtier grave and serious"
"Here is a case unprecedented"
Finale, Act II
