The prompt for this story was “Gnomes vs. Flamingos: the flamingos lost,” submitted by penguingirl03. This story fits into Chapter 58 of Already in Progress, which admittedly hasn’t happened yet, but this isn’t at all spoilery.

Rating: G

Dramatis Personae
Dongsool Wheeler, in his mid-teens.
Paul Wheeler, about eight.
Dongsool and Paul are brothers by adoption.

Setting
Dongsool’s room. Dongsool is working on a model. Paul mooches over.

PAUL: What’re you doing?
DONGSOOL: I’m making a new model of my character. Cakethus came out with a new elf bard, and it looks more like her.
PAUL: Oh. (watches for a while) Did you see the game last night?
DONGSOOL: No, you saw me. I was doing my calculus homework. Can you pass me the paint thinner? It’s the clear one.
(Paul passes it over, dejected. Dongsool looks at his face, and then)
DONGSOOL: So since I missed the game, do you think you could tell me about it?
PAUL: (perking up) Really?
DONGSOOL: Uh-huh. I’d love to know what I missed.
PAUL: Okay! So it was Sim State versus La Fiesta Tech. And the Gnomes won the tip-off, but then the Flamingos took the field, and there was a big scrum – wll, two big scrums – and GilsCarbo put his boot right in Bruty’s eye, and he got a yellow flag for that, only it should have been a blue one really but the ref missed the call, they showed it on the replay, and the puck was definitely offside, but he got a yellow flag anyway. And La Fiesta scored nine in the first half! Nine!
DONGSOOL: Wow.
PAUL: I know! But in the second half Bruenig and Benedett hit a double play for bogie, and that meant that Le Tourneau got a penalty go and everybody thought he was going to make and then he clotheslined, and, and, and it was really exciting.
DONGSOOL: It sounds like it.
PAUL: Yeah! It was awesome! (smiles happily)
DONGSOOL: So… who won?
PAUL: (scoffs) The Gnomes, duh. Weren’t you listening?

Notes
Obviously one team’s mascot is a gnome and one is a flamingo, but I couldn’t tell you which is which – I don’t follow college sports. Or any sports, really. Maybe one of my readers who does follow sports could enlighten us?

Cakethus is not a real gaming company. But there is a popular American RPG gaming company whose name is pronounced “pie so”…
