The prompt for this story was “‘Why do you have to be a nonconformist like everyone else?’ (James Thurber)” submitted by rosefyre. This story fits into Ruth’s (un)Officially Wacky Boolprop Challenge so far in the future that I can’t even predict the chapter number. One of the main characters isn’t potty trained yet, and the other hasn’t even been generated by the game, let alone had me figure out the name. If this setup is not too spoilery for you, enjoy!
Rating: G
Dramatis Personae
Nanki-Poo Shankel, alien and into the idea of “rock and roll” in a big way.
His Girlfriend, as described, a recent initiate to the concept of “rock and roll.”
Setting
A reasonably private location on campus.
NANKI-POO: Will you marry me?
HIS GIRLFRIEND: What?
NANKI-POO: I said “Will you Marry me?”
HIS GIRLFRIEND: You want to get married? To me?
NANKI-POO: Yeah. That’s kinda why I asked. We can have two point five kids – okay, call it three – and a dog and a minivan and a white picket fence.
HIS GIRLFRIEND: That’s not very rock and roll, is it?
NANKI-POO: Rock stars get married all the time. Five, six, seven times, even. And anyway, like forty percent of couples just live together, and forty to fifty percent of all marriages end in divorce. So if you get married and stay married, you’re actually defying the prevailing social norms, which is very rock and roll.
HIS GIRLFRIEND: And you know I can’t have children.
NANKI-POO: Adoption is a truly awesome thing. We can have our very own Rainbow Tribe, like Josephine Baker. But she was rich, so we should probably stop at three – one of each. (thoughtfully) The minivan can be purple with flames painted on it.
HIS GIRLFRIEND: A purple minivan with flames.
NANKI-POO: Who says we have to conform to other people’s ideas of what non-conformity is? We can make our own path and do whatever we want. And what I want to do is marry you. So what do you say?
HIS GIRLFRIEND: Wow. Okay.
NANKI-POO: That’s a yes?
HIS GIRLFRIEND: That’s a yes.
NANKI-POO: Rock and roll.
Notes
Josephine Baker was a famous entertainer who (in addition to being a tireless advocate for civil rights, a member of the French Resistance, and the first African-American woman to star in a movie) adopted 12 children from all races and many different countries. She called her family the “Rainbow Tribe.” (Source)
The title comes from an old Allan Sherman song/routine: “The Rebel.” I couldn’t find a video on YouTube, but you can find it on the album My Son, The Greatest. Basically, The Rebel and his girlfriend spark a national protest. Soon everyone is rebelling, so the rebel and his girlfriend decide to be “square” instead. As Allan Sherman put it: “Boy oh boy, did they conform!”
The statistics on cohabiation were based on this interview and the divorce statistics were based on this article – neither one of which is particularly specific, but I figured that statistics probably would not be at the forefront of Nanki-Poo’s mind just at the moment.
