Dramatis Personae
Descartes Littledragon, made of Awesome, in his junior year.
Abbey Tsvirnukov, a freshman.
Setting
The study lounge on the second floor of the dorm. Both desks and one of the couches are full; there is an empty seat next to Descartes, who is busy studying.
ABBEY: Hi. (indicating seat next to Descartes) Is this seat taken?
DESCARTES (automatically, without looking up): No, I was saving it for you.
(Abbey smiles briefly and sits down, taking her books out of her backpack and otherwise getting settled. Descartes looks up to see why she hasn’t responded to his joke and freezes. He stares at her as she opens her textbook and begins making notes. After a little while, Abbey becomes aware of his attention and glances up. Descartes is not quite quick enough to look away.)
DESCARTES: Er, what are you studying?
ABBEY: (holds up textbook) Anthropology 101. You?
DESCARTES: Oh. Um. H. Rider Haggard. She. For “Imperialism in Victorian Literature.” Junior English requirement.
ABBEY: That’s nice. (goes back to her book)
(Descartes goes back to his book too, but keeps sneaking glances at Abbey and doesn’t seem to be turning many pages. This continues for some time, until Abbey begins packing up her things again.)
DESCARTES (with studied nonchalance): Headed to class?
ABBEY: Uh-huh. (picks up her backpack)
DESCARTES: (rises quickly) Well, it was great studying with you. (sticks out his hand) I’m Descartes, by the way.
ABBEY: (shakes his hand) Abbey. Nice to meet you.
DESCARTES: Yeah, you too. (watches her walk away, then, softly, in wonderment) Meet someone new, plus one thousand!
